At the Newberry, Registration Starts August 7, 2018 for Gogol’s Tales: Icons, Demons, Noses, and Overcoats

Artist Olga Ionaitis

Nikolai Gogol is one of the most gifted and enigmatic great writers, who at various times has been read as a realist, a symbolist, a fantasist, a comedian, a satirist, and a tragedian. This fall at the Newberry, I hope you will join us to read and discuss the fiction of Nikolai Gogol (1809 – 1852), a supreme master whose fiction was to have a tremendous impact on the subsequent development of Russian literature. We will focus on close textual analysis of Gogol’s Ukrainian and Petersburg tales and examine how his influential but elusive fiction led to a broad range of re-workings and re-imaginings in fiction, film, and visual arts.
