I’m excited and honored to be teaching a live, online course, Malevich’s Black Square in the Tradition of Russian Icons, at Roundtable this October. Roundtable by The 92nd Street Y, New York (92NY), is a world-class destination for online courses and curated conversations on literature, the arts, history, and much more. Their unique virtual platform brings all of this great knowledge into one easily accessible site for you to enjoy whenever and wherever you like, including a virtual library of on-demand courses and live sessions.

We will meet for two sessions on Wednesday afternoons, October 16 and October 23 from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Central Time (2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Eastern Time).
Syllabus
Session 1
Reading Icons: Imagery and Symbolism in Russian Icon Painting
The first class will be about the history, deeper meaning, and significance of traditional Russian and Slavic icons. You will learn how to “read” icons and explore the main icon types, styles, use of imagery, and symbols. We will discuss the revival of interest in early icons.

Malevich’s Black Square as a Modern Icon
During our second session, we will follow Kazimir Malevich, through the prism of his groundbreaking painting and an icon of modernity, The Black Square, first displayed at The Last Futurist Exhibition (0,10) in St. Petersburg in 1915.
